Beginnings

Sixteen years ago, when Florrie and Seymour Morgenstern first mobilized their friends in an effort to get Spanish River Concerts (then known as Community Performing Arts) off the ground, there was very little debate over what it was; it was simply four concerts for 1,500 people. The legacy that came to fruition was created as a result of Florrie’s childhood love of music, and the notion that, regardless of income bracket, the ability to enjoy the arts should be shared by everyone.

Since that first season, SRC presents 40 or so world-class concerts each season. The generosity of others continues to lend its mark of distinction to the community that was born from Florrie’s idea. Through the efforts of many, Spanish River Concerts has become an organization on which thousands depend as a meaningful source of social and artistic enjoyment. The 2019 Season continues a concert series of unique, original productions and musical excellence.

The First Series

Florrie was uniquely cut out for the task of taking Spanish River Concerts from concept to execution as a successful entrepreneur throughout the years. Florrie’s passion for music, infectious energy, and determination were vital assets as she assumed the roles of founder, creative director, and chief executive of their new endeavor.

With the unflagging support of Seymour, close friends and neighbors, Florrie became an expert at making deals without compromise. She auditioned and hand-picked the very best musical artists, secured state-of-the-art venues, and ensured that each concert had free parking!

There was such a demand for Spanish River Concerts that the very first series completely sold out, with nearly 1,500 seats taken! With this momentum, Florrie and Seymour strapped in for a second season, and haven’t looked back since.

Community Outreach

After 12 years running as a for-profit company, it became clear that more staff was needed to handle Spanish River Concerts' operations as it continued to grow rapidly in popularity. The productions now greatly benefit from a budget that is not solely limited to ticket revenue but community support activities and participation at a new level of inclusiveness.

As a non-profit, revenue from grants and donations allow us to keep ticket prices reasonable, raise production value, and pursue a tremendous scope of artists. Additionally, we introduce further benefits to the South Florida community as we pursue even greater outreach activities.

Popularity

Today, Spanish River Concerts is comprised of multiple series and brings world-class music to nearly 12,000 members of South Florida. Because of this rapid growth, Florrie’s son, Jeffrey, joined the family business as Executive Director. Something that never changes: The personal touch that Florrie, Seymour, Jeff and their team bring to each and every concert. Come join us for another spectacular season of shows!
